BENGALURU: On the intervening night of May 2 and 3, five-year-old Geeta (name changed) lost both her parents. They were among the 24 patients who died at the Chamarajanagar district hospital allegedly due to shortage of oxygen. But unlike many children who share her fate in the brutal second Covid wave, Geeta found the loving arms of family soon.
Her paternal aunt, who is childless, stepped in to adopt her. The wife of a marginal farmer, she said she had no second thoughts as she has been caring for Geeta for the past few weeks as the family grappled with the pandemic. ....

41k fresh Covid cases in Karnataka, 35k recover | Bengaluru News

BENGALURU: Karnataka’s total positivity rate, which had dipped marginally in the past two days, touched 32.8% with the state reporting 41,779 fresh cases and 373 deaths on Friday.
As many as 35,000 persons recovered from Covid. Bengaluru saw 14,316 cases and 121 deaths. A total of 12,898 persons recovered in the city.
On the vaccination front, 56,360 doses were administered on Friday and 46,307 of them were second dosage. Minister K Sudhakar said 75,000 doses of Covaxin were received from the Centre, taking the total vaccine count to 1.1 crore.

BENGALURU: With more than 3 lakh patients under treatment, Bengaluru’s active caseload is the highest among all cities in both waves as ministers and task forces failed to plan for a massive surge.
Bengaluru’s first-wave peak was 66,854 active cases in mid-October just a little over fifth of the present number. This explains why beds and oxygen are in acute supply in the city.
No other Indian city has crossed the 1-lakh active case mark since the outbreak of the pandemic in 2020. Delhi’s active-case peak was 99,752 on April 28, 2021, and Mumbai’s was 91,100 on April 11, 2021. All other cities have had active cases under 70,000. ....

BENGALURU: A record 50,112 fresh infections on Wednesday pushed Karnataka’s Covid tally beyond 17 lakh, a grim milestone only Maharashtra and Kerala have crossed so far. The state’s previous daily record was 48,296 on April 30.
The state reported its highest-ever daily fatalities of 346. Bengaluru reported 23,106 fresh cases, around 3,600 lower than its singleday record of 26,756 cases on April 30. The state has a total of 17.4 lakh cases, including 4.8 lakh active ones.
Bengaluru’s active cases touched 3.1 lakh, while deaths jumped to 7,006, 161 of which were added on the day.
The state, which breached the 15-lakh mark on April 30, has added 2.2 lakh cases in five days since. Nearly a quarter of them were from Wednesday. ....

Covid second wave: Bengaluru to test only symptomatics | Bengaluru News

BENGALURU: With testing laboratories overburdened as the Covid second wave rages in Bengaluru, the state government has tweaked its testing strategy for the techcapital only symptomatic persons and primary contacts will be subjected to tests.
The move, according to officials, is aimed at improving the efficiency of testing laboratories. While laboratories are overloaded with work, the number of people turning up for testing out of fear is compounding the woes of testing personnel.
Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) chief commissioner Gaurav Gupta, while interacting with apartments associations on Saturday, said: “Only symptomatic cases (those who have fever, cough and breathlessness, among other symptoms) will be tested and not general cases as there is a heavy load on testing labs.” ....
