India: COVID, climate change pushing Sundarbans women to distress


Sagar Island, India – In April last year, 17-year-old Rani Khatun, a resident of Sagar Island in the Sundarbans, would spend most of her day in school, preparing for the upcoming board exams. She wanted to be a teacher one day.
Less than a year later, Khatun is a school dropout and a victim of domestic violence after a forced underage marriage.
Sundarbans, the world’s biggest delta, is a 10,000 sq km (6,213 sq miles) dense forest of tidal mangroves, straddling India’s eastern coastline and western Bangladesh, opening into the Bay of Bengal.
Crisscrossed by rivers, it is home to nearly 4.5 million people on the Indian side, with a large part of its population being subsistence farmers, dependent on fishing, paddy and betel leaf cultivation, and honey collection. ....

West Bengal Assembly Elections 2021: Molest slur on central armed police force jawan


The West Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Rights has written to the Bengal chief election officer, seeking immediate steps against a central armed police force jawan accused of molesting a minor girl in Hooghly district on April 5 night, a day before he served on election duty in potential violation of the law.
Sources said a 15-year-old girl had allegedly been dragged into a school and molested by the jawan who was posted there for election duty. 
The sources said the chairperson of the WBCPCR, Ananya Chakraborti, had visited the home of the girl on Wednesday after being informed of the incident.  ....

Posters to fight child labour in Covid times


The state commission for protection of child rights released three posters as part of a sensitisation programme against child labour on Thursday.
The posters were released at Shramik Mela 2021 at Ramlila Maidan. The fair, a two-day affair, is being organised by the labour department of the state government.
This comes at a time when chances of children dropping  out of schools and looking for work is high because of the hardships posed by the pandemic.
The posters depict contrasting images of a child as a labourer and another as a student, with a line in Bengali to drive home the message against child labour. ....

Trafficking: boys as vulnerable as girls


Adolescent boys are as vulnerable to trafficking as girls, said activists and others trying to prevent human trafficking.
Boys are trafficked to work as bonded labourers in jewellery units, zari workshops and massage parlours, and also to peddle drugs, the activists said.
Most of the victims are tempted to take up the offers because of financial constraints at home. They are forced to work for 12 hours a day and are paid peanuts or nothing at all, said a senior official of International Justice Mission, an NGO involved in prevention of child trafficking and rescue of victims.
Last year, the NGO with the help of Chennai police had rescued 61 boys from a jewellery factory there. Among the boys, 44 were minors and 33 from South 24-Parganas. ....
