SHUTESBURY Major infrastructure improvements, a senior citizen property tax exemption and a $6.63 million operating budget for fiscal year 2022 are being presented to voters at annual Town Meeting on Saturday.
As in 2020, voters will convene in the field behind the Town Hall at 1 Cooleyville Road at 9 a.m. to take up the 26-article warrant. People are encouraged to bring chairs, though a large tent will be available to protect people from the elements. A port-a-potty also will be set up.
One of the sizable capital projects is the $1.1 million project for replacing a culvert at the Locks Pond Road and Lake Drive intersection, with $500,000 to be borrowed, $250,000 to be transferred from the capital stabilization account, and the remaining money coming from a $500,000 Municipal Small Bridges state grant, where $150,000 has already paid for e ....

AMHERST Amherst officials are becoming increasingly concerned with efforts to revise the formula by which the four Amherst-Pelham Regional Schools member towns contribute to its operating budget. The options take into account not only enrollment but each of the four towns’ ability to pay.
At a meeting of the four towns Saturday to discuss the projected $32.01 million budget for fiscal year 2022, and what each town should pay to educate students at the middle and high schools, Amherst At-Large Councilor Andy Steinberg said moving away from the formula of a 5-year rolling average of enrollment to a more complex method determined by the state could lead to the district’s demise. ....

CHESTERFIELD – David Kielson, whose work as an accountant and volunteer had a large impact on western Massachusetts, died Dec. 31 of COVID-19. He was 85 years old.
“He always felt like he wanted to contribute to the local community,” said Leslie Kielson, his youngest daughter.
Kielson moved to Chesterfield in 1983, following a career as an accountant in New Rochelle, N.Y. He did so with his wife, Gail, after their three daughters had left home. ....
