For the past week there have been demonstrations in the city of Jerusalem, and there has been little media coverage of the events. Everything from arrests, beatings, and prevention of religious services have been perpetrated by the Israel Defense Force (IDF). What is happening in the lands of Palestine is modern-day, violent colonialism, and there needs to be more attention paid.
On April 22,  police in Jerusalem blocked access to the Al-Aqsa Mosque, and set up barricades throughout the city of Jerusalem. These blockades were met with resistance by Palestinian youth. In response to this resistance, right-wing Israelis marched through the streets of Jerusalem chanting “death to Arabs.”  ....

Sage Phillips ’22 has been named a Udall Scholar.

University of Connecticut rising senior Sage Phillips ’22 (CLAS), a political science and human rights major, has been named a recipient of a prestigious national scholarship for the second time in less than a month.
Phillips has been selected as a 2021 Udall Scholar, which is awarded on the basis of commitment to careers in the environment, Tribal public policy or Native health care; leadership potential; record of public service; and academic achievement. ....

It is time to sever ties with those who have oppressed for centuries
The country of Canada is a constitutional monarchy. This means that the Crown has authority but must exercise it in accordance with the constitution of the nation-state. Since the first settlers came to Turtle Island, they have considered themselves to be under the rule of a monarchy. Not necessarily the same one, but there has always been a monarchy that has had jurisdiction over settlers in Canada.
Everything that the Canadian state has ever done, for, against, or with Indigenous nations is on behalf of the abstract but legally binding idea of the Crown. The Crown is credited with the signing of the numbered treaties among other things. This also means that crimes against Indigenous nations, like the residential school system, have technically been on behalf of the British crown. ....
