…How Nigeria surmounted 1953, 1963, 1973, 1983, 1993, 2003, 2013 hurdles
By Clifford Ndujihe, Politics Editor
GOING by the calendar of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, the 2023 presidential election is exactly 671 days away.
On October 15, INEC National Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, announced February 18, 2023 as the date for the 2023 presidential contest.
He made the disclosure at the inauguration of the House of Representatives committee on 1999 constitution review.
Since the date was fixed the polity has been charged as hordes of presidential contenders and pretenders criss-cross the length and breadth of the country strategising, aligning and realigning. There have been posturing among the six geopolitical zones over which region should produce President Muhammadu Buhari’s successor. The two leading political parties-ruling All Progressives Congress, APC ....

The tricycle prospects in Kano - By: . .

The tricycle prospects in Kano
By
Thu Mar 04 2021
The recent strike by tricycle operators in Kano has raised some very fundamental issues facing the state and others that depend on rents to survive and have no plans for the future.
No state in human history has ever existed without surplus exaction, the only difference is how it is done and for whose benefit. Fukuyama in his book ‘The Origins of Political Order’ described Nigeria and other sub-Saharan countries as libertarian’s paradise because of little or no taxes. “The region as a whole is a low tax utopia, with governments often unable to collect more than 10 per cent of GDP in taxes compared to 30 per cent in the United States and 50 per cent in parts of Europe”. Taxes apart from providing necessary government revenue for the public good, they are generally useful for the purpose of correcting market distortions to spur entrepreneurship and importantly for the re-distribution of wealth for social har ....

Hajiya Gambo Sawaba: 'The most jailed Nigerian female politician' | Women News

Stories from the life of Hajiya Gambo Sawaba, one of northern Nigeria’s most important female political activists, who was born on this day in 1933, have become the stuff of folklore.
According to one, her fighting spirit was evident when, as a young girl growing up in northern Nigeria in the 1930s and 40s, she would always intervene in other children’s fights on the side of the loser, telling them: “I have bought this fight from you”, before carrying on the scuffle.
The fights came frequently, and her clothes would inevitably get torn. So, the story goes, in order to minimise the frequency with which she would have to replace her daughter’s damaged dresses, Sawaba’s mother, Malama Fatima, resorted to making them out of tarpaulin. ....

An Open Letter To Alhaji Sir Ahmadu Bello, The Sardauna Of Sokoto, By Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah

An Open Letter To Alhaji Sir Ahmadu Bello, The Sardauna Of Sokoto, By Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah
When you look back now, I believe even you will realize that your controversial Conversion campaigns laid the foundation for mistrust in the house that you had built earlier. Since then, there has been increasing distrust among our people and the chasm has grown even deeper. We have spilled so much blood around the north, you will be shocked to see how many unmarked graves there are.

I am not sure I know how to address you especially now that the formal Ranka ya dade is of no use to you since you are now in eternity. However, because this is a very special year, I had decided to write two letters, one to you and the other to Sir Tafawa Balewa. I thought I should start with you for obvious reasons. These letters are my formal way of having an imaginary conversation with both of you. In a way, I want to give you a report of what you l ....
