Labor shortage impacting local tourism industry

In February 2020, Alex and Maria Nikolic bought Harborage Inn in Boothbay Harbor and looked forward to a robust tourist season. In March, the COVID-19 pandemic hit and curtailed any hopes they had of a profitable first season. But times have changed, and 2021 looks like a great season. Alex Nikolic reports the tourist season is off to a strong start. “We were booked solid for our first weekend in April, and our first two months have been strong,” he said. ....

Belfast Area High School students present ideas, earn awards at 75th Maine State Science Fair

BELFAST Belfast Area High School students joined 200 fellow students and competitors from around the state for the 75th Maine State Science Fair, with a special emphasis on the ocean’s ecology and its relation to rising temperatures.

Chelsea Gaiero, Jonah Lovejoy, and Grace Hall participated in the April 3 virtual fair, which was organized by The Jackson Laboratory and the Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance.

The fair comprised 157 students representing 23 schools in eight Maine counties tuned in to present virtual research or engineering projects to a panel of judges and attend events. High school students from across the state competed for prestigious state titles and over $1 million in scholarships and awards. ....

As we send our students home today for the holidays in what has been a challenging academic year, I am thrilled to announce a very significant financial contribution we recently received. Mr. Paul Coulombe sent to the Boothbay Region Education Foundation (BREF), a check for over $128,000, specifically to pay for major improvements to the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) programs at Boothbay Region Elementary School and Boothbay Region High School. His contributions give us access to cutting-edge hardware and software, we will use to engage students in 21st-century learning initiatives. ....

Foreign language availability needs to be changed

Dear Editor:
As a student at Boothbay Region High School, I feel earlier access to foreign language is needed. Bilinguals have access to more job opportunities (such as flight attendants), and a better understanding of other cultures and societies. Other than the money problem, which has various solutions, there is no reason foreign language shouldn’t be a required class sometime in grades K-8.
Many people, even those who take four years of foreign language, aren’t anywhere near proficient. Saying “hello” in another language is much different from piecing together whole sentences. If we aren’t proficient or getting close to proficient after two or three years, what is the point of taking foreign language classes? ....
