The Bureau of Meteorology advised Cairns Airport had received 194mm between 9am Monday and 8.30am Tuesday, and that it would be hard to suggest the record hadn t already been broken, but the data needed to be confirmed, which could take days. Another 79mm of rain has fallen at the airport in the past six hours, though the day s heaviest falls so far have been at Tully where 128mm has fallen since 9am.

Cairns rocked after woman is allegedly dragged into a garden bed and assaulted

19:37 EDT, 7 March 2021 An Australian tourist hotspot has been rocked after a Japanese woman was allegedly assaulted in a terrifying late-night attack. The woman was walking along Bunda Street, in Cairn s CBD, about 9.30pm on Saturday when a man allegedly approached her from behind.  He then allegedly grabbed her face and neck before forcing her into a garden bed, the Cairns Post reports.  A woman was allegedly assaulted by a 21-year-old man while walking in Cairn s CBD (Bunda Street pictured) on Saturday night A security officer patrolling the area saw the alleged attack and called out to the man, who then ran from the scene.

LETTERS EXTRA / footpaths, falls and failures IAN Meikle’s recent column, “Little arrows pave way for footpath frustration” (“Seven Days”, CN February 4) had me nodding in agreement. As a ratepayer I am happy to see my bins emptied on a weekly basis, for fresh water to come out of the taps and enjoy an occasional trip to the arboretum – but in the 16 years that I have lived in North Canberra the abysmal condition of the suburban footpaths never ceases to amaze me.  The first job of government is to protect its people – so how many Canberra residents end up in hospital or medical centres each year after tripping over on our Third World-quality footpaths? Concrete is cheap – healthcare is not.
