Joseph Lino Padilla: Tennessee man charged in DC riot requests release


A federal judge is deciding whether to release an East Tennessee man arrested in connection to the U.S. Capitol riot in January. 
Joseph Lino Padilla, 40, of Cleveland, Tennessee, was arrested on several charges after investigators say evidence surfaced of altercations between him and police guarding the Capitol building. 
Padilla is accused of arguing with police officers at a barricade outside the Capitol building and later throwing a flag pole at a group of officers, according to federal court records. 
His charges include obstruction of law enforcement during a civil disorder, assault on law enforcement with a dangerous weapon, and violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds. ....

A federal judge in the District of Columbia has ordered a Maine man held in jail there while he awaits trial on charges stemming from the deadly riot at the U.S. Capitol.
“What I see is someone who has very passionately held beliefs, perhaps abnormally so, and it appears they can get the best of you, that you can lose control and you can become violent,” U.S. Magistrate Judge G. Michael Harvey said to Kyle Fitzsimons of Lebanon during a virtual hearing in Washington on Wednesday. “You are like a bomb waiting to go off. … The bomb did go off on Jan. 6.” ....

When a top federal judge in Washington, D.C., convened court on a recent morning in one of the hundreds of cases stemming from the storming of the Capitol, it was pitch black outside of prosecutor Adam Alexander’s windows.
“What time is it in Alaska?” Chief U.S. District Court Judge Beryl Howell asked.
“It is 5:03 a.m. in the morning,” the Anchorage-based assistant U.S. attorney replied cheerfully via Zoom. ....
