United Way grant money set to help local kids stay active
The United Way of the Wabash Valley is providing a second grant to help keep students active.

WABASH VALLEY (WTHI) - The United Way of the Wabash Valley is providing a second grant to help keep students active.
In total, $30,000 will be distributed to several local schools and organizations across the Wabash Valley. The money comes from the United Way s Youth Success Impact Council.
The aim is to help keep students active and involved in school.
The grants help those in kindergarten through 12th grade who struggle with attendance or staying engaged in class. ....

City of Dallas Refuses to Pay Dallas County Election Costs


Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson led the push to refuse the county’s new payment request.
“In a low turnout election like these council races are, some of them being decided by a couple of dozen votes, you should be outraged at this. We re paying for this,” Johnson said.
The Mayor had endorsed District 7 candidate Donald Parish Junior, who finished third on May 1 by just 25 votes to miss the opportunity for the June runoff.
The run-off will include second-place candidate Kevin Felder, the district’s former council member, and incumbent Adam Bazaldua.
Several of the late opening polling places were in District 7.  ....

Columbia schools finalize budget without tax increase and tweak start and end times for next year


When: Columbia Borough School District board meeting, May 6.
What happened: The board adopted a $27.57 million proposed general fund budget for the 2021-22 school year with no tax increase.
Overview: The school district’s real estate tax rate is set at 26.46 mills. Taxpayers with an average assessed property would pay $2,470. Overall, the district projects revenues of $26.69 million, up 2.29% from 2020-21, and predicts $27.57 million in expenses, up 1.59% from the current year. District reserves would be used to cover an estimated $878,982 deficit between revenues and expenses.
Expenses: The $432,782 rise in expenses is attributed to a $420,000 increase in cybercharter tuition. The district will reserve $1.5 million for charter school services and $315,000 for tuition to River Rock Academy, same as the current year. The district will also add a new assistant to the superintendent, salaried at $110,000; technology support specialist, $35,000; autistic support teach ....

Almost two weeks after Dallas voters were turned away from several polling sites that didn’t open for hours most in South Dallas the city’s elected leaders refused to commit paying nearly $1.5 million for the county to oversee the June 5 runoff elections. ....
