MY dad, former Saints and Warrington halfback Alan Gwilliam passed away recently at the age of 71. He had been in ill health for a few years and finally succumbed on 7 May 2021. Admitted to Whiston Hospital on April 24 he was diagnosed with sepsis, ‘Gwilly’ was only given a few days to live, but always being a fighter, Dad defied medical experts and managed to hold on for a further two weeks. In a year that has seen so much sadness, separation and death for everyone across the country it s difficult to put Dad’s journey into context as no life is worth more than any other. ....

Dan Whelan Delays in approving 5.3m sq ft of logistics development on Green Belt land in Bolton, Wigan and St Helens are preventing the region from capitalising on unprecedented levels of demand, experts warned. The Government has called in Harworth Group’s West of Wingates, a proposed 1m sq ft industrial scheme in Bolton; Parkside Colliery, a 1m sq ft project to be delivered by St Helens Council and developer Langtree; Peel L&P and PLP’s 1.8m sq ft Haydock Point in St Helens; and Tritax Symmetry’s 1.4m sq ft Symmetry Park in Wigan. “Had they been allowed last year there would have been stuff already up, built and let on all of those schemes, and [the fact that they’re not yet approved] is going to have an impact on supply moving forward,” said Rob Taylor, head of industrial at Cushman & Wakefield. ....

Some 3.4 million people live within an hour of St Helens, which is served by excellent transport links and good digital connectivity, Harris added. St Helens is looking to bring forward 654 acres of employment land for development, including 355 acres at the former Parkside Colliery, which is earmarked for 1m sq ft of logistics space but has been called in for review by the Government. ....
Quad patrols at the Dream Pic: St Helens Police POLICE say they have increased high-visibility patrols in response to concerns over illegal off-road bike use. The Star reported yesterday that quad bike patrols were put in place in Thatto Heath following community concerns. St Helens Police have said on Facebook on Sunday evening that they stepped up their presence in various locations across the borough in response to the issue. This includes the Dream site at Sutton Manor and the ex-Parkside Colliery in Newton-le-Willows. A statement by police said: Local officers have been providing high visibility today (Sunday) on quad bikes, in a number of locations that you report to us as concerns or where there is clear illegal off road bike use. ....
