There was a time, in the early 1900s, when fog horns bellowed out from all along Britain’s coastlines. Today, they’ve largely been silenced, but they still linger on in collective memories, informing notions of lonely seascapes and, at times, Britishness itself.

FINDING THE MOTHER TREE: Uncovering the Wisdom and Intelligence of the Forest by Suzanne Simard
Forester Suzanne Simard becomes a ‘forest detective’ and begins to challenge the short-sighted management practices that threaten the long-term survival of forests. One very hot British Columbian summer, she begins to discover types of fungal network – ‘mycorrhiza’ or, literally, ‘fungus root’ – that trade ‘water and nutrients from the soil in exchange for sugars. from their plant partners’. Hundreds of them, all doing different tasks.

THE NIGHTINGALE: Notes on a songbird by Sam Lee book review
by Sam Lee • Century
I’m not convinced I’ve ever heard a nightingale sing. According to Sam Lee, this is not hugely surprising in the UK. Nightingale numbers have been on a steady decline in this country and the birds are only found in a few southern locations. Gone are the days (if they ever existed) when
A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square, as the old Vera Lynn song goes.

Where is the highest mountain on Earth? How did life begin? Where do 90 per cent of earthquakes occur? The answers, of course, can be found in the vast tracts of the deep ocean, the least understood and explored parts of our planet, which make up by far the largest biome on Earth.

Mexico City Could Sink Up to 65 Feet

When Darío Solano‐Rojas moved from his hometown of Cuernavaca to Mexico City to study at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, the layout of the metropolis confused him. Not the grid itself, mind you, but the way that the built environment seemed to be in tumult, like a surrealist painting. “What surprised me was that everything was kind of twisted and tilted,” says Solano‐Rojas. “At that time, I didn t know what it was about. I just thought, ‘Oh, well, the city is so much different than my hometown.’” ....
