Dieuwertje J. Kast


Dr. Dieuwertje Kast is the Director of STEM Education Programs for the University of Southern California’s Joint Educational Project. Through her efforts, she has provided STEM instruction to over 26,000 underrepresented minority students, 600 educators, 25 school principals, and countless community members. She coordinates supplemental science programs in Los Angeles for low income elementary school students of color across a gamut of schools through the Wonderkids, Young Scientists Program, and the Medical STEM Program. She also volunteers with EE Just, a program dedicated to bringing Black youth into marine biology, and the USC Neighborhood Academic Initiative, where she teaches research methods to first-generation high school Latinx students with expeditions to Catalina Island and research symposiums. ....

This is the eleventh in a series of Get to Know posts highlighting and celebrating the contributions of exemplary Scientists Emeriti.  Their work, experience, and contributions are essential to the mission of the USGS. 
Gary brings more than 50 years of experience with the USGS and the judgement and expertise he has developed over his long career to everything he does as an emeritus. This includes not only his scientific pursuits, but also his work in improving the USGS and the Earthquake Science Center by building relationships with colleagues and responding to numerous requests for assistance or advice. UMaine students' curriculum design projects highlight past, present of the 'Everglades of the North'  - UMaine News


Two University of Maine undergraduates are designing place-based education materials and K–12 curricula about the Grand Kankakee Marsh in Northern Indiana as part of a National Geographic Society grant. 
Mo Weitman and Bell Gellis Morais are working with Katherine Glover, research associate at the Climate Change Institute (CCI) and recipient of a National Geographic Society Early Career Grant, to develop materials that will educate students and teachers about the past and present of an area once referred to as the Everglades of the North. 
Weitman and Morais’s curriculum design forms part of the outreach component of Glover’s project, “Biogeography of the Grand Kankakee Marsh, Northern Indiana, U.S. over the past 5,000 years,” which seeks to reconstruct the history of the region and contribute to restoration efforts.
