From January to April, the country also spent nearly 2.6 billion U.S. dollars importing plastic products, up 15.4 percent from the same period last year, according to the office. In 2020, Vietnam imported over 6.6 million tons of plastic totaling more than 8.3 billion U.S. dollars, up 3.5 percent and down 7.7 percent respectively from the previous year. Between January and April, Vietnam imported over 571,000 tons of cotton worth 984 million U.S. dollars, up 6.5 percent in volume and 11.7 percent in value. Over the period, the country also poured 880 million U.S. dollars into importing 414,000 tons of yarn, up 23.9 percent and 19.8 percent respectively. Last year, Vietnam spent 11.8 billion U.S. dollars importing cloth and earned roughly 29.5 billion U.S. dollars from exporting garments and textiles, according to the office. China was Vietnam s largest supplier of cloth, followed by South Korea and Japan. ....

With that revenue, phones and components continued to be Vietnam s largest export item, followed by computers and electronic components. Between January and April, Vietnam also spent over US$6 billion importing phones and their components, surging 44 per cent year on year. In 2020, the country earned roughly US$50.9 billion from exporting phones and components, mainly to China, the United States and South Korea, posting a year-on-year decline of 1 percent, according to data from the office. ....
