Maitland, Fla – We’ve all had to make major adjustments just to do our jobs during the coronavirus pandemic and the movie industry is no different. The movie that opens the 2021 Florida Film Festival is a testament to that.
“Because of Charley” was shot in Central Florida at the height of the pandemic in September of 2020. The film was shot in 21 days in Celebration, Kissimmee and Orlando.
Continuing to film a calculated risk
Filming for the movie began in September during the height of the pandemic and the peak of hurricane season.
“It was a difficult decision to move forward, but worth taking the calculated risk,” said Executive Producer Lisa Enos Smith. “My business partner, Jon Binkowski, and I chose to help members of the filmmaking community who were adversely affected by the coronavirus. The cast and crew were thrilled to be working and participating in a film that is extremely relevant to what is happening in the world today.”
To move forward with production, Smith and Binkowski adopted the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA)’s strict COVID-19 Safety Guidelines, a detailed set of protocols enabling employers to provide a safe workplace.
Florida once had an incentive program for the film and television industry, but the Legislature killed the program several years ago, and with it went most of Florida's film industry. Now, a new performance-based rebate program could help bring back the industry with new guardrails the old program lacked, writes Paul Sirmons, an indie film producer and member of the trade association Film Florida.
