ACLU alarmed, seeks to overturn ruling of Boynton Beach mom filming police


Journalism organizations and civil rights groups are joining forces to overturn a West Palm Beach appeals court decision that they claim could block the press and the public from videotaping police.
Raising the specter of cellphone footage that captured George Floyd’s murder by Minneapolis police, ACLU attorneys on Friday urged the 4th District Court of Appeal to reconsider its decision to uphold the arrest of a Boynton Beach woman who turned her video camera on cops.
“It’s a profoundly disturbing decision and contrary to a long line of federal court rulings,” said American Civil Rights Union attorney Jim Green. He is representing various groups, including the National Press Photographers Association, the Society of Professional Journalists and the Florida Justice Institute. ....

Central Florida organizations assist refugees with TPS

Several organizations in Central Florida teamed up to provide assistance to Venezuelan refugees, helping them fill out important paperwork to acquire Temporary Protected Status.

Many refugees coming to the U.S. are fleeing from dangerous situations in Venezuela
Saturday s event was to help them with paperwork, questions
Temporary Protected Status can be granted to people from 12 countries, mostly in South America and the Middle East
It’s also referred to as TPS.
If granted, they would be protected through the beginning of September of 2022.
Organizers said many of these refugees coming to the United States are fleeing from dangerous situations in Venezuela. ....

A bill that changes how attorneys are paid when they represent policy holders in property damage claims and shortens the time property owners have to file insurance claims has cleared its second Senate committee.
SB 76 also would limit when multipliers can be applied to lodestar attorney fee awards and ask the Supreme Court to amend Florida Bar rules to require attorneys in the claims cases to file a copy of their client closing statements with the state Department of Financial Services.
The measure passed the Senate Judiciary Committee on March 9.
The bill would cut time property owners would have to file claims from three to two years and allow insurance companies to offer discounted roof replacement p ....
