On Aug. 17, 2017, the Bluffton Public Library held a “Great American Solar Eclipse” watch party. We passed out special sunglasses for people to watch the eclipse. Can you believe that? - Lauren Canaday This is a sample of the content of Bluffton Anthology - A creek runs through it. Copies are now available for $24.95 plus tax in Bluffton at:

Do you have any idea how exotic this place is?

I suppose I do, I answered in the Ohio fashion, meaning Tell me more, meaning Convince me, meaning No much surprises us. The back yards all garden and grass, too hot or cold to inhabit most of the year. Vegetation without irrigation, streets empty in the middle of the week, and clouds so bored them wait around for days, just in case. Girl running, one arm swinging loose, toward the door and her warm room.

Now that was service!

I was in the Green Hornet (our 1957 Nash) and pulling into the D&E Sinclair station at the corner of Main and College Avenue, where our public library now stands. As I pulled up to the gas pump, Dean Nonnamaker, with a big smile on his face, ran out to the car before I could roll down the window. I said, Fill er up, and while asking about the kids he was not only filling the gas tank, but washing the windows, lifting the hood to check the oil and kicking the tires to make sure the pressure was okay.

Did Elvis stop in Bluffton in 1956 on his way from Toledo to Troy?

On Thanksgiving Day 1956, Elvis Presley performed twice in the Toledo Sports Arena. Two days later he performed at the Troy Hobart Arena, just north of Dayton. In 1956, without an interstate highway, the most direct route from Toledo to Troy went through Bluffton on old U.S. 25, which was Main Street. About 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 24, 1956, two funeral-size limousines with Tennessee plates pulled into to Bucher’s SOHIO station to gas up at the corner of North Main and Jefferson. (Today, it is Bluffton Auto Repair, part of Stratton Auto Group) The first car parked in front of the gas station along Jefferson Street. The second car, a big blue limousine with a roof rack, pulled in front of the gas station, taking up both available gas pumps.
