Hoggets earmarked for sale in 2021 should be critically assessed with the question asked if trading now or retaining them to autumn breeding sales is the most economical choice.
Record hogget prices: Hogget prices of €170 to €180, or even higher, have increased to a level that even the most optimistic market forecasters could not have dreamed of.
There is little excuse for plainer-type hoggets earmarked for selling in 2021 that are not ideally suitable for breeding to miss the boat while prices are strong.
Granted, many systems are set-up to carry ewe hoggets to fulfill stocking rate requirements or utilise available grass, but this should not prevent hoggets being critically assessed. ....

The benefits of applying N this spring

During a recent webinar about grazing management on sheep farms, Philip Creighton of Teagasc spoke about the benefits of applying nitrogen (N) this spring.
Philip said: “Once we have built our grass covers as part of our closing plan, we need a number of things such as heat, moisture and N to boost growth rates.
“The decisions around what to apply and when to apply is based around our stocking rate (our demand) and how much grass we need.
“By applying N early we can see many benefits, especially in terms of reducing concentrate requirements and ultimately costs. ....

Maximising the use of clover to replace N fertiliser

The use of clover in grassland to replace fertiliser nitrogen (N) can substantially lower greenhouse gas (GHG) and ammonia emissions from pasture-based production.
James Humphreys, a Teagasc researcher and Dan Barrett, farm manager at Teagasc Solohead farm, outlined clover sward fertiliser management from the 12 years of research at Teagasc Solohead farm.
Using Clover to replace fertiliser N
Averaged over 12 years at Solohead, research found similar pasture production from grass-clover swards receiving 95kg/ha of fertiliser N applied in spring compared with swards receiving 245kg/ha applied across the growing season.
Clover has a higher temperature requirement than grass for growth and therefore chemical N was applied in February, March and April to compensate for this. ....

Newford Farm update: weather playing ball with ideal grazing conditions

The upturn in weather has brought a significant increase in grass utilisation over the last week.
After a tricky start, grazing conditions have improved significantly on Newford Farm over the last week. This has allowed the remaining yearling heifers, another batch of cows with calves at foot and yearling bullocks to be turned outdoors. This now leaves 50 cows and their calves, 56 yearling heifers and 39 yearling bullocks at grass.
The cows and calves are run in two batches and are being grazed in paddocks with the heaviest covers. As it transpires, these paddocks also typically have good shelter, with account taken of where cows and calves would be most suited to graze when closing paddocks last autumn. ....
