WSU students received honorable mention for national public relations competition

A team of four WSU students are awaiting their score sheets after their public relations campaign won an honorable mention for the 2021 Bateman Case Study Competition.
Emily Harris, Bateman competition team leader and senior public relations major, said it was amazing to get recognized, especially because there were 54 teams nationwide.
Sherwin Francies, writing and research director for the Bateman competition and senior public relations major, said he was still sleeping when he received a call from another team member, Steffi Ludahl, social media coordinator for the competition and senior public relations major.
“The first thing she said was, ‘We didn’t place, but we got honorable mention,’” Francies said. “And it was bittersweet because we were really expecting to place, but we still received an honorable mention, which is huge.”  ....

Public records show fraternity knowingly spread COVID-19

A WSU student and former fraternity chapter president will face a contested hearing on Feb. 16 regarding pandemic violations that occurred last semester.
Zachary Thornton, former president of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, received an infraction for Duty to Control Premise on Sept. 10. The Pullman Police Department received a report of a party with more than 10 people at the SAE facility with no social distancing in place, according to public records obtained from Pullman PD.
The Evergreen contacted Thornton and current SAE president Robert Myers, but they did not respond.
When officers arrived at SAE on Sept. 10, multiple individuals were seen leaving. Officers did not enter the building so they did not know exactly how many people were inside, said Pullman PD Sgt. Chris Engle. ....

WSU alumnus serves as city administrator

For many years, Mike Urban heard the Pullman mayor’s voice echo over the loudspeakers in Martin Stadium. He did not expect to hear that same voice offer him a director position in 2019 or appoint him as city administrator this month.
Urban graduated from WSU Global Campus with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 2011, as well as a Master of Business Administration in finance in 2016. He said he grew up in Mt. Vernon, a small town between Bellingham and Seattle.
After his father started having health complications, Urban said he took over the family equipment rental business.
He said he was forced to fall back on his business degree when he injured his back and could no longer do physical labor.  ....
