Watch: grazing update from Tullamore Farm

The latest batch of cows and calves turned out to grass onTullamore Farm.
With over 80 cows and their calves and 200 ewes and lambs at grass at this stage, demand for grass is rapidly increasing on Tullamore Farm.
The past 10 days to two weeks has seen grass growth curtailed, initially due to wet weather and more recently due to low temperatures.
This leaves the average farm cover at a little over 500kg DM/ha at the moment.
While this is still acceptable, the worry is that grass demand is currently exceeding growth.
Burst of growth
If a burst of growth does not come over the weekend or early next week, Shaun will be forced to start meal feeding to cows to slow up the rotation. ....

Staying ahead of the dip in grass growth

SHARING OPTIONS:
Reports indicate that grass supplies are very variable on sheep farms at present.
Some farmers who had a good grass surplus or who are lambing later and are building demand slower are still in a relatively good position, while others find themselves in a trickier position.
For the latter group, a significant increase in grass growth may get many out of trouble and back on track quickly. For others, careful management will be required to steer a course back on track.
While the change away from harsh northeasterly winds is providing kinder conditions, temperatures are forecast to remain relatively low. This means all farmers will need to keep a good eye on grass supplies over the coming week. ....

Dairy Management: return to winter weather

While last week s weather could only be described as brilliant, there s been a huge change over the last day or so.
Up to last weekend, soil temperatures were running at 2°C to 3°C higher than normal at between 9°C and 10°C.
The current cold spell has dampened air temperatures, but farmers need to remember that soil temperatures lag air temperatures, so they are slower to heat up and slower to cool down.
What impact this cold spell will have on grass growth will all depend on how long it lasts for.
A prolonged cold spell will certainly drop growth rates. ....

Virtual Machinery Day: LESS application methods go head-to-head

The dribble bar is the cheapest and easiest LESS system used.
Slurry applied using the injection method leads to no leaf contamination and reduced odour.

In episode one of Virtual Machinery Day 2021, we look at the various different low-emission slurry spreading (LESS) systems. Many farmers have availed of grant-aided support through the Targeted Agricultural Modernisation Scheme (TAMS) to make the move to LESS technology, with over 2,800 systems funded to date under the scheme. In order to meet our emission targets, reduce ammonia losses to the atmosphere and to become more sustainable as an industry, it is important we make the transition. ....
