The Grass Week: rain and rising temperatures exactly what was needed

Dairy cows grazing in the rain near Calliaghstown, Co Meath. \ Ramona Farrelly
The rain earlier this week was a big help to many farmers around the country who were supplementing cows and cattle in order to reduce demand and stop the average farm cover (AFC) falling too low.
The cold, dry weather over the last month had a big effect on grazed ground and regrowths have been poor.
In some areas, rainfall was low and there is very little rain forecast over the next seven days.
It is very important not to let AFC fall below 550kg DM/ha or you risk running into a grass shortage. ....

URA FC move four points clear after Mbarara City win as SC Villa held by BUL FC

The Tax Collectors, who had gone for two straight matches without getting a win, could have added the second in the 34th minute but Kagimu’s header hit the woodwork and his effort from the rebound went inches wide.
URA went into the half-time break enjoying a 1-0 lead and after the start of the second half, they continued to pile pressure for more goals and it was no surprise when Kagimu made it 2-0 in the 61st minute, slotting home a pass from second-half substitute Ivan Sserubiri.
They could have been 3-0 up three minutes later as Joackiam Ojera whipped a superb ball into the danger zone but Ibrahim Dada’s header was deflected out by a Mbarara City defender for a fruitless corner kick. ....

Genetic Mixing in Grass Still a Surprising Mystery in Plant Genetics

(Photo : Photo by Radosław Cieśla from Pixabay)
Grass is still grass, right? Well, for some scientists its widespread presence belies one of the biggest mysteries in plant genetics.
Because in order for it to spread, it needs to wildly adapt to all facets of an ecosystem. Now, how can a single species of plant accomplish this with every fiber of its own genetic makeup?
The answer: It doesn t. It takes genes from others.
To date, there are about 10,000 species of grass in the world (including bamboo, as well as grains like wheat and rice). And across that wide variety, scientists have found that some independent grass species have inherited as many as 59 genes from others (including some very distant relatives)! ....

Five things to consider when reseeding

Spreading lime is recommended before reseeding as this corrects soil pH.
Ground conditions have improved significantly and with dry weather forecast in the week ahead, there will be some farmers looking to reseed less productive grassland.
Before going to the expense of reseeding grassland, there a few things to consider first, some of which are outlined as follows.
1 Lime and soil fertility
Grass growth can be heavily curtailed if soil fertility is poor. There is little point reseeding a sward without correcting soil pH along with P (phosphate) and K (potash) levels beforehand.
If fields have recently received fertiliser or currently being grazed, there is little merit in taking a soil sample at this stage of the year, as fertility levels will be heavily distorted. ....

Watch: creating a new habitat for pollinators on Tullamore Farm

A pollinator patch being planted on Tullamore Farm.
This spring on Tullamore Farm, there is a focus being placed on pollinators and wildlife in general.
The aim is to protect habitats already there, create new habitats and increase pollinator numbers.
There are plenty of grass margins on the farm and these margins and verges will not be mowed or treated with pesticides.
Plants that grow naturally, such as dandelions, daisies, vetch and grasses, can provide plenty of food for pollinators and corridors for wildlife to travel along.
Dedicating an area to wildflowers and grasses
There is a small paddock on the farm which is not in use for most of the year and so it was decided this area would be dedicated to biodiversity on the farm. ....
