Paper giant APP failing its own sustainability goals, report alleges
A new report urges bank and buyers to stop doing business with Asia Pulp & Paper (APP), one of the world’s biggest paper producers, for its alleged failure to uphold its own sustainability commitments.
The report, by the Environmental Paper Network (EPN), a coalition of NGOs, lists a litany of violations from destruction of tropical peat ecosystems to the prevalence of burning to persistent community conflicts associated with APP’s operations in Indonesia.
The company has denied the allegations, saying it continues to make strides in restoring peat areas of its concessions and resolving land disputes with local and Indigenous communities. ....

Thumbs up for fast boat ferries

BUTTERWORTH: A sense of excitement filled the decks of Penang’s fast boat ferries on New Year’s Day.
Commuters turned up at dawn to catch the first ferry to the island at the Sultan Abdul Halim Ferry Terminal here.
Businessman Chai Shyan Jaw, 49, was among the earliest, who arrived at 5.45am at the terminal beside Penang Sentral.
“Since today is my day off, I decided to kickstart the new year by trying out the new ferries.
“They’re much safer and quicker than the former ferries, which I took regularly in the past.
“I can now conveniently cross over to the island for a delicious breakfast and some sightseeing and return right after, ” said Chai, who took dozens of photos and videos throughout the short journey yesterday. ....

Amid reports that China is slowing down its investments in a trillion-dollar project called the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), one U.S. aid agency says it’s still going full steam ahead.
The BRI, or the New Silk Road, is a colossal undertaking by the Chinese government, announced in 2013, to build networks infrastructure, maritime, digital, and more across the world.
