The stop acceptance order doesn t affect other Littoral Combat Ships from rival shipmaker Austal. The U.S. Navy is refusing to accept delivery of additional Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) from defense contractor Lockheed Martin. The Navy has identified a defect with the ship that has led to at least two breakdowns among Freedom-class ships, and the service won t take any new ships until the defect is fixed. The defect is yet another setback for the LCS program, one of the most troubled Navy shipbuilding programs in recent memory. The problem, U.S. Naval Institute News reports, is a flaw in the bearings system that links the Rolls-Royce MT30 gas turbine engines to the Colt-Pielstick diesel engines. The two engines combined can push a ....
DARPA The Pentagon s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is set to begin building the first OpFires intermediate-range missile. OpFires will allow the U.S. Army to strike time-sensitive targets up to 1,000 miles away. The missile’s development is possible because of the end of the INF Treaty on nuclear weapons. The Pentagon s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is preparing to build a working copy of the new OpFires hypersonic missile. OpFires, destined for the U.S. Army, will give the service the ability to strike targets with a fleeting window of opportunity, covering the weapon’s 1,000-mile range in 20 minutes. ....

Northrop Grumman The torpedo can attack submarines or torpedoes. Unlike previous lightweight torpedoes, the VLWT will be used by aircraft, surface ships, and submarines. The U.S. Navy plans to field its first new torpedo in decades, and one candidate is Northrop Grumman s Very Lightweight Torpedo (VLWT). Originally designed to protect aircraft carriers from incoming torpedoes, VLWT could be used by aircraft, surface ships, and even submarines. The weapon can be used both as an offensive weapon against enemy submarines, or a defensive one against inbound torpedoes. ➡ The VLWT, according to National Defense, was originally designed to defend the Navy’s aircraft carriers from submarines. Installed on carriers, the mini-torpedoes would be launched at the first sign of enemy attack, homing in on the incoming torpedoes. ....
