Covid-19 task force members list remains non-updated on website, Newsline
DePaul’s Covid-19 task force members list remains outdated despite several members changing positions.
After closing campus last spring, DePaul created the task force to monitor Covid-19 in Chicago and on campus.
According to Newsline, this task force was “a group of more than 30 DePaul administrators, staff and faculty who are applying best practices and guidance from medical and public health professionals to the complexities of restarting campus.”
Health sciences professor Craig Klugman is one of the force’s medical professionals, along with Associate Director of Emergency Services Cheryl Hoover and Director of Health Promotion and Wellness Shannon Suffoletto. They are listed as co-chairs of the Community Health Monitoring committee.
Dr. Sydney Dillard, a professor in the College of Communication, is suing DePaul for racial and disability discrimination.
The letter appears to reference recent lawsuits filed by Drs. Sydney Dillard and Lisa Calvente, both of whom sued DePaul in 2020 for racial discrimination. Former law professors Terry Smith and Sumi Cho also sued the university on grounds of racial discrimination in 2018 and 2019, respectively.Â
Faculty and staff lament limited opportunities for growthÂ
The statement also addressed concerns from faculty and staff regarding a perceived lack of opportunity for professional growth within the university, with both parties expressing feeling âcultural taxation â heavy service, mentoring demands, and diversity work that goes uncompensated and undervalued, and frequently made them targets for racial hostility.âÂ

In the wake of last summerâs protests against police brutality and amid the ongoing calls for DePaul to divest from the Chicago Police Department (CPD), the university community remains starkly divided on the schoolâs partnership with Chicagoâs Fraternal Order of Police (FOP).Â
DePaulâs relationship with the FOP, Chicago Lodge 7, originated in 2016 to encourage members of law enforcement to pursue higher education at a convenient pace and discounted rate. The cohort program offers multiple degree options specifically tailored to members of law enforcement. Through the city of Chicago, officers in the program can receive up to a 100 percent tuition reimbursement, contingent on their final grade and other factors.Â
