Mangrove rivulus fish hate enforced water aerobics. Despite her best efforts, Giulia Rossi, a biologist who recently received her doctorate from the University of Guelph, cannot coax the fish to swim against a current in a laboratory tank. “They refuse to exercise in water,” she told me. “They just let themselves hit the back mesh.”
When plucked
out of water, however, the stubborn swimmers quickly whip themselves into shape. Rossi boops their snoots with a clicky ballpoint pen, and the fish which are amphibious, and can survive on land for weeks at a time backflip out of reach. ....

How bat's can be the key to the next pandemic

Global rise in human infectious disease outbreaks” back in 2014 suggests that the total number of global outbreaks has increased since 1980. Since then, we have had the SARS epidemic back in 2003, the H1N1 virus in 2009, the MERS outbreak in 2012, the Ebola outbreak in 2014, and now COVID-19. Ryan Troyer, PhD, virologist at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry says that they want to be ready for the next coronavirus pandemic and explains the link in bats.

“We find that these coronaviruses in each of those cases, there are related coronaviruses in bats,” Troyer said.
“Even though the transmission to humans can is potentially complicated, bats appear to be a unique and important reservoir species for a high diversity of different coronaviruses, including ones very similar to those that have emerged in humans.” ....

Many researchers are already working on developing vaccines for the next pandemic, even though they don t know what it will be.
Scientists don t know when or where the next coronavirus pandemic will emerge. They aren t sure exactly what virus it will be. But they re already working to develop a vaccine against it, aiming to have a shot ready to be pulled from a freezer to vaccinate the population before it can spread around the globe.
We really think that there needs to be more research on emerging diseases and establishing quick platforms or quick solutions that allow us to rapidly respond rather than trying to catch up, said Prof. Volker Gerdts, CEO and director of VIDO-Intervac at the University of Saskatchewan. His team has just started human trials of its COVID-19 vaccine. ....
