Jason Lee Middle School in Tacoma is one step closer to changing its name.
Tacoma Public Schools Superintendent Carla Santorno recommended to the district’s Board of Directors on Thursday a new name for Tacoma’s Jason Lee Middle School: Hilltop Heritage Middle School.
The school, which enrolls around 600 students, has been undergoing a name-change process since last summer, after people wrote to school leaders asking for a change. They cited a history of cultural genocide and abuse of indigenous people by the man the school was named for. ....

Kayaktivists protests on Lake Union against proposed natural gas plant in Tacoma

Some kayaktivists demonstrated on Lake Union on Thursday pushing back against a plan to build a multimillion-dollar liquified natural gas plant in Tacoma.
Demonstrators protested outside the home of Puget Sound Energy CEO Mary Kipp.
Critics said the proposed facility is not sustainable and that it poses a grave risk to the environment.
“With climate crisis, we already know it’s here and it’s time to pull back and get a plan for renewable energy, and not a source of fossil-fuel energy like the liquified natural gas facility,” said Dakota Case with Puyallup Water Warriors. ....

Last week, KIRO 7 TV reported that the Puyallup Tribe is launching a new effort to restore the Indigenous name “Tacoma” to Mount Rainier.
But what about Mount Baker, which was given that name 229 years ago this week?
Unlike the battle between Seattle and Tacoma civic leaders over the name of Mount Rainier which goes way back to the 1890s – or even the new efforts of the Puyallup Tribe, there doesn’t appear to have ever been the same level of conflict or even any dispute over the name of Mount Baker.
