A Brooklyn native with more than 25 years of planning experience has been nominated to serve as the next director of Detroit’s Planning & Development Department.
Mayor Mike Duggan announced Wednesday that he has selected Antoine Bryant to serve in the post following a nationwide search. The Detroit City Council is expected to vote on the nomination Tuesday.
Bryant previously served as business development and project manager for architecture firm Moody Nolan in Houston, where he worked on projects in historic African-American neighborhoods. The city notes that Bryan s career focus has been the development and social empowerment of underserved communities. ....

Protesters crash Stellantis' environment initiative announcement

Peaceful protesters on Thursday crashed a Stellantis NV announcement for a $1 million investment seeking to make the east Detroit neighborhood in which it built its new Jeep assembly plant the greenest in the city.
Roughly a dozen residents of Beniteau Street and demonstrators with the Detroit People s Platform carried signs and chanting Beniteau can t breathe  during the morning news conference that included the planting of a disease-free elm. They alleged environmental racism by Stellantis and called for greater action to be taken with respect to pollution from the plant and assistance for home repairs.
They put a Band-Aid on it, Robert Shobe, a 26-year resident of Beniteau, said of the actions the automaker has taken as part of its community benefits agreement with the city and impact-area residents. This wouldn t happen in a non-Black community. ....

Detroit to Receive $30 Million to Build Apartments and Residential Units in Corktown

​City officials said the three development projects will reserve more than 160 apartments as “deeply affordable.” That means a two-person household with a total income of less than $19,000 per year would be able to live there.
Detroit is receiving $30 million in federal funding to build 840 new housing units  with 500 set aside under the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development’s “affordable” housing guidelines  in Corktown.
The city was selected by HUD as part of the Choice Neighborhoods program, and the money will toward three projects in the neighborhood, including new apartments near the Michigan Central Station on Michigan Avenue. Ford is building a new 30-acre campus in Corktown. ....

Nonprofits create network to boost housing stability in Detroit

A group of six Detroit-based housing nonprofits are coming together to create the Detroit Housing Network, an effort to boost housing stability and affordable home ownership in the city. 
The work, announced Thursday, is backed by a $2.2 million dollar investment from the city of Detroit and Rocket Community Fund. The aim is to grow resources for homeowners. Services will include: mortgage and financial counseling, property tax foreclosure prevention, home repair help, utility assistance  and assistance for households with low incomes who want to become homeowners. 
Residents will be able to apply for help through an online portal at detroithousingnetwork.org. The launch date for online enrollment has not been determined. ....
