NEW HANOVER COUNTY –– Through the passing of the upcoming county budget, teachers in New Hanover County Schools would become the highest paid in North Carolina.
The $22.6 million allocated toward local salary supplements would nearly double the current average supplement to $9,000 and raise the district’s ranking in teacher pay from the 27th to the top slot in the state, according to statewide data from the 2020-21 school year. Currently, Wake County Schools offers the highest supplements at an average of $8,873, followed closely behind by Charlotte-Mecklenburg. ....

Wilmington-area history strengthened by work of McEachern, Williams

WILMINGTON – In Beverly Tetterton’s early days at the helm of the library’s Local History Room, she got a piece of memorable advice from a stalwart in the field – Leora Hiatt Billie McEachern.
“She came down to the library one day and told me that if I was going to be the local history librarian, I needed to know some local history,” Tetterton said.
Dry as it might sound, this was an invitation to the young librarian to learn from and alongside of McEachern’s hard-fought years of research and work that produced massively influential works but not always the same amount of respect. ....

How Wilmington is honoring its 10 oldest buildings

WILMINGTON – Take a stroll through downtown Wilmington and you re bound to encounter history in every block.
Even if you aren t looking for it, the stories of the Cape Fear region stand out from the modernity of the ever-changing downtown district. Nowhere is this more true than on the front porch and lower level entrance of the Burgwin-Wright House, where striking sapphire-colored plaques are now fixed beside the doorways.
The hard-to-miss blue plaques are the first debuted in a new initiative by the Historic Wilmington Foundation to better signify a historic place s age and role in the city s larger history.
The new plaque s color signifies the structure it is found on is more than 200 years old. In fact, the Burgwin-Wright House itself is 250 years old (completed in 1770) and the stone structure it was built on – remnants of the city s first jail – is more than 270 years old. ....
