WILMINGTON Robert Merritt “Bob” Kermon III, 78, was surrounded by the love of his family when he passed away peacefully at his home Saturday, Feb. 13, 2021.
Bob was born Oct. 4, 1942, in Wilmington to the late Mary Meares Kermon and Robert M Kermon Jr.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Gail Otts Kermon; sister, Mary Anne Hughes (Warren); daughter, Alma Anne Doehrer (Tom); sons, Robert Merritt Kermon IV (Maya) and James Clifton Kermon (Caroline); and grandchildren, who were all very close to him, Alex Swan, Andrew Swan, Robert M. Kermon V, Natalie Kermon, Juliana Kermon, Caleb Kermon, Kaley Kermon and Camille Kermon. ....

Nancy M. Andrews, 76, retired from the banking industry

CALABASH Nancy M. Andrews, 76, died Monday, Feb. 15, 2021.
Born Dec. 9, 1944, in New Hanover County, she was a daughter of the late Frederick Mote and Anna Nall Mote. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Martha Goff.
She was a graduate of New Hanover High School and went on to work in the banking industry in Charlotte and Richmond, Virginia. She retired as an assistant vice-president at the age of 51. After moving home to North Carolina, she became certified as a firefighter and EMT with the Ocean Isle Beach Fire Department.
Surviving are her husband, Jesse Dan Andrews; and daughter, Beth A. Moore (Malcolm) of Calabash. ....

Gerry Teachey Williamson, 81, passionate gardener who coaxed beauty and nourishment from the earth

WRIGHTSBORO Gerry Teachey Williamson, 81, passed away peacefully Monday, Feb. 1, 2021, surrounded by her family.
Gerry was full of life; funny and fun-loving, yet meticulous in planning and execution of projects, whether it be managing the operations of a dredge in her career with Great Lakes Dredge and Dock or creating hundreds of Christmas cookies for friends and family each year.
Born in Rose Hill in 1939 to Audrey Farrior Teachey and Alfred Elmo Teachey, she grew up surrounded by her brothers and sister and many cousins. Her grandparents, Lucy Southerland Farrior and Hatch Ward Farrior, played a big part in her upbringing, as did many aunts and uncles. Her brothers are Alfred Teachey of Nevada and Dwight Teachey of Pender County, and his wife, Linda Edens Teachey; and her sister is Judy McCloud of Wilmington. Their children are her dear nieces and nephews. ....

Wilmington WWII veterans share history, legacy they left behind

The World War II service of two lifelong Wilmington friends led them on similar paths from the Normandy beaches to final victory along Germany’s Elbe River.
Daniel David Cameron and Chris Eugene Fonvielle graduated together from New Hanover High School in 1938 and Virginia Military Institute (roommates) in 1942, both age 21.
Cameron trained at Camp Davis near Wilmington and landed over Omaha Beach on June 8, 1944. A three-year captain, he commanded automatic weapons Battery B of the 430th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion which protected field artillery.
“We were always exposed, but did not take too many casualties.”
He campaigned with the 5th Corps through St. Lo and Normandy, France; Holland; the Bulge in Belgium; and the German Siegfried Line, Roer River and Rhine River. For the final spring 1945 drive to the Elbe to link with Soviet forces, he served in the 19th Corps. ....
