State offers financial help for businesses impacted by COVID-19


Businesses seeking help with rent, lease and mortgages are encouraged to apply for $200 million in State of New Mexico grants allocated to assist those impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
House Bill 11 (HB-11), the Local Economic Recovery Development Act (LEDA) was introduced in the New Mexico House of Representatives Jan 25, and after some revisions was passed. HB-11 passed the New Mexico Senate Feb. 18, 41 to 1, after senators added amendments. The day after it passed the House concurred and Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed the bill Feb. 26.
“Thousands of New Mexico businesses will be able to receive assistance through this grant program so they can hire or rehire employees,” said Economic Development Cabinet Secretary Alicia J. Keyes. “Building this new capacity to create jobs is a cornerstone of the state’s recovery plan.” ....

The Gila National Forest is requesting all visitors to practice social distancing in accordance with New Mexico State health guidelines when visiting the various lookout towers located in area ranger districts. According to a release, the Gila National Forest has 10 lookout towers situated on high vantage points where the fire lookout can see smoke that may develop in addition to determining fire locations, report weather changes, and plot the location of lightning strikes during storms. It is requested that all forest visitors do not ask to use the employee’s restroom, enter the historical cabin which serves as the employees residence, and do not climb the tower to enter the cab and speak with the Forest Service Employee. ....

Las Cruces School Board Reviews Classroom Equity Policy

The LCPS Board of Education met in a work session Tuesday to review a previously adopted equity policy mandating a more inclusive curriculum.

The Las Cruces Public School Board stood by their decision to implement a LCPS policy designed to promote equity in the classroom amidst critical public comment. The policy, which was adopted in April, calls for additional curriculum to be created that takes into account both the home cultures and languages of students.
During a second reading of the policy, School Board Member Maria Flores spoke about the impact it will have in the classroom. ....

When state Rep. Melanie Stansbury found herself in distant second place after the first round of voting by the Democratic Party’s state central committee, she started to work the phones.
