NEW MEXICO – As the number of people and communities affected by the COVID-19 pandemic grows, so do the scams associated with it. Scammers use public health emergencies as opportunities for new fraud schemes, and because older adults are at greater risk for serious illness from COVID-19, they may target older populations.
It’s important to remember that although the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other public health officials including state contact tracers may contact you if they believe you may have been exposed to the virus, they will not need to ask you for insurance or financial information. ....

State officials warn people about COVID-19 vaccine scams

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. As the state continues to roll out the COVID-19 vaccine for seniors and people living with disabilities, state officials are warning people to be on the lookout for COVID-19 vaccine-related scams.
Registering for the vaccine is free whether it’s done online or by calling the New Mexico Department of Health.
“We are focusing on helping those folks register and specifically folks who are in rural and remote or frontier parts of the state that may have limited access to the internet,” said Samantha Morales, director of senior medicare patrol.
So how do people know if they’re getting a call from the state or a scammer? ....
