Carlsbad band Stranded a finalist for New Mexico Music Awards

Guitarist Mike Ybarra thinks about his niece Brianna who died at 21 from cancer when Ybarra’s band Stranded plays their latest song “Angel’s Bridge.”
Drummer Raul Ortega thinks of a friend who died from suicide and singer Jason Vigil thinks about his late mother.
Ortega’s bass drum throbs in the opening of the song, meant to represent a heartbeat ahead of the lyrics on loss and reconnecting with loved ones in the afterlife.
“The first verse is about losing a loved one. The second verse is about seeing them again and reminiscing about our lifes,” Ybarra said. “Pretty much about losing a loved one but having hope of seeing them again. When my niece passed away, I was kind of inspired by that.” ....

Singer/songwriter wins major award for composition

Doug Figgs recently won the Wrangler Award from the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City for the Best Western Composition of the Year. (Courtesy of Doug Figgs)
SOCORRO – Music has always been around Doug Figgs since he saw his dad – who was also a guitar player and singer – make music throughout his childhood.
“I saw how much he enjoyed it and how much enjoyment he got out of it,” the younger Figgs said. “It was just something that I wanted to do.”
Figgs started elevating his music to the professional level in the 1990s when he started playing in various bands. In 2011, he went to the annual convention for the International Western Music Association, where he attended a songwriting workshop. He then started writing songs and released his first CD soon after. ....
