Help wanted: Bilingual early childhood teachers

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. The state is looking to boost the number of bilingual and multicultural early childhood educators in New Mexico.
The New Mexico Higher Education and Early Childhood and Care departments are teaming up to spur recruitment and create a pipeline for personnel.
According to a news release, the state budget includes $7 million for this effort, which is billed as “the first of its kind.”
The money can go toward hiring costs, recruitment initiatives and endowments.

Governor Signs Bills Benefiting Students, Higher Education

SANTA FE Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has signed several budget and policy measures that will benefit higher education students, support workforce development, and fund key initiatives at public and Tribal colleges and universities across New Mexico.  
A top administrative priority, the New Mexico Opportunity Scholarship will receive $18 million to support part-time and non-traditional students as well as recent high school graduates in pursuing certificate, associate, and bachelor’s degrees at public and Tribal colleges and universities in New Mexico. The scholarship was originally established in 2020, but was limited to students attending full-time and pursuing two-year degrees.   ....

New Mexico Governor signs independent Carlsbad college bill

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed House Bill 212, also known as Remaking NMSU Carlsbad branch campus into an independent College, on April 7.
HB 212 creates the Southeast New Mexico College effective July 1, 2021. It was passed in the New Mexico House and New Mexico Senate during the 2021 regular legislative session, along with its companion bill Senate Bill 236. 
I could not be more pleased with the outcome, said New Mexico Rep. Cathrynn Brown who sponsored HB 212.
While we will always honor New Mexico State University as an excellent institution of higher education and we are thankful for our many years of alliance with the NMSU system, the coming change will be markedly beneficial. The reorganizing of the Carlsbad branch into an independent community college will allow for a more focused attention to local needs. Students will benefit from expanded course offerings. New Mexico Senate OKs bill to make NMSU Carlsbad independent college


Senate Bill 236, a bill which creates a platform for the transition of New Mexico State University Carlsbad to an independent college, passed the New Mexico Senate by a vote of 39 to 2 on March 8.
Titled Independent Carlsbad Community College the bill was introduced by Sen. Gay Kernan (D42), and received extended debate on the Senate floor prior to passage.
One thing you have to understand about becoming independent there is no additional cost to the state and would in no way add an additional college because it would simply be changing from a branch college to an independent college, Kernan said in her introduction of the bill. ....
