250 Acres Of Delaware Farmland Saved From Development

New Castle County Executive Matt Meyer noted the conservation of nearly 250 acres of critical farm and wildlife lands near the Port Penn area of southern New Castle County. The now protected Warren and Gillespie tracts are critical pieces of land because of their proximity to sea level and sensitive habitat for native and migrating birds on the East Coast flyway. This closes a nearly decade-long saga by eliminating two pending lawsuits and comes at zero costs to New Castle County taxpayers.
“Today we put preservation over development, at zero cost to the taxpayer,” said County Executive Meyer. “This will preserve nearly 250 acres in southern New Castle County, provide 40 acres of open space for a future park and dramatically reduce threats to water quality. It further brings closure to over a decade of lawsuits related to development in this area. I am pleased to announce this win-win arrangement that will conserve critical habitat for future generations.” ....

The $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan Act, the stimulus bill passed last month by federal lawmakers, will send about $108 million to New Castle County government.
The county wants its residents to help decide where that money goes.
County Executive Matt Meyer on Tuesday announced plans for community engagement and input.
Residents are encouraged to submit their ideas and suggestions at www.newcastlede.gov/reimagine.
Per the bill, the funds can be used for the following:
Respond to COVID-19 or its negative economic impacts, including assistance to households, small businesses, and nonprofits, or aid to impacted industries such as tourism, travel, and hospitality ....

New Castle, DE – New Castle County Executive Matt Meyer announced today that the county will begin accepting applications for National Health Corps Delaware Members for the 2021 Pilot Program Cohort. To apply, prospective applicants should visit application.nationalhealthcorps.org.

Few Delaware Latinos get COVID-19 vaccine, and advocates cite frustration with state

Nationally, Blacks and Latinos are experiencing the worst outcomes, with a higher percentage being hospitalized or dying from the disease. There are signs of significant vaccine disparities throughout the country, according to data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The state announced earlier this month that Delaware would expand its COVID-19 vaccine distribution program to better target communities of color.
This includes working with the Wilmington Housing Authority to vaccinate residents age 65 and older who live in high-rises for older adults, officials said. Some pharmacies received 4,000 doses this past week with the purpose of vaccinating traditionally underserved communities. ....
