In Farewell To NEXT, New England News Collaborative Enters New Chapter

Editor’s Note: After five years on air, our weekly radio program
NEXT is coming to an end. The show focused on New England at a time of change and featured stories from journalists across the New England News Collaborative.
The good news is that these powerful stories aren’t going away. We will showcase our collaborative journalism on this website, NENC.news, and we are ramping up our next phase of New England reporting to bring you more news and conversations from the region.
Still, sunsetting the show wasn’t easy.
NEXT fan Alvaro Castro Rivadeneira left us a voicemail this week praising our thoughtful journalism.  ....

Sophomore William Riley and junior Chris Pare, co-presidents of the Lakes Region school’s outdoors club, say they’ve learned a fair amount in school and online about climate change globally but they ve heard less about how New Hampshire is changing.
“How is that going to impact, say, the ski season in New Hampshire and your everyday life?” Pare said. “Rather than it being something that’s kind of just there and you’re not really personally seeing those impacts.”
That shift is the focus of the summit he and Riley organized, on their own time – not for a class or grade. The virtual event will include New Hampshire state climatologist Mary Stampone and other researchers from Plymouth State and the University of New Hampshire who are focused on lakes, soil, snow and adaptation issues. ....

Column | Team Molly: Lt. Gov. Gray Hires a Political Staffer to Stay 'Connected'

weekly political column.
Tim Newcomb
Here s something you don t see very often. In fact, it may be unprecedented in Vermont. One of the six statewide officeholders governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, attorney general, treasurer and auditor has hired a paid political staffer outside of her official, state-funded office in the first months of a new term.
I never had paid political staff in the odd-numbered years that I recall, said former Democratic governor
Peter Shumlin in response to a question from Fair Game. In fact, because I m such a frugal Vermonter, I put off having a paid campaign staff as long as I possibly could. I usually didn t start that until the legislature adjourned in the election year. ....
