NEWLAND â The CVS Pharmacy on Pineola St. was temporarily closed due to a car crash that caused structural hazards. On July 8, Christine Verra Petti, 75, of Plantation, Fla., was pulling into the parking lot of the CVS around 12:30 p.m. when she âhit the gas while attempting to hit the brake,â according to an incident report from the Newland Police Department. According to Newland PD, the 2017 Lexus struck the side of the building and entered the establishment, colliding with a soft drink machine and other items inside the pharmacy. NEWLAND â The Newland Board of Aldermen convened for its regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, April 6, in which it moved through a packed meeting schedule as it handles additional changes in the absence of a town manager. At the beginning of the meeting, the aldermen quickly moved to approved the meeting minutes form the previous meeting, as well as the emergency meeting minutes in which the town approved a contract with Water Quality Lab Operations in Banner Elk to perform water quality tests for the town. In public comments, a local resident addressed some issues she was having with the lights at Shoemaker Park in Newland, where one light shines into her bedroom window. She asked if there was a reason the lights were affixed the way they are and asked if perhaps if the lights were used to keep people from sleeping in the park. ....
NEWLAND â On Tuesday, Jan. 5, during the Town of Newlandâs regularly scheduled meeting, Town Manager Keith Hoilman announced that OâReilly Auto Parts would be opening a store in town. Hoilman had received the plans for the OâReilly Auto Parts from the developer, which he said is planned to be built at 335 Linville Street, the former location of The Avery Journal-Times, and will be a 7,200-square-foot building. The old building will be demolished, and a brand new one will be built. âItâs good for the town to get another business. I had been working with Tommy Burleson, and the developer, also the engineer,â Hoilman said. ....
