For The Inter-Mountain The Inter-Mountain photo by Amanda Hayes Chief Matt Gregory presents the Buckhannon Police Departmentâs annual report. BUCKHANNON While people staying home during the pandemic COVID-19 lowered car wreck reports in 2020 and misdemeanor arrests for the Buckhannon Police Department, a different problem continues to plague society. “The one thing that was consistent, unfortunately for the year, was drug activity,” Chief Matt Gregory said at last week’s Buckhannon City Council meeting. “Again, I believe that was due in large part to the pandemic as well. We saw a period of time in the middle of the year where we were having several overdoses – not just here in the city but in the surrounding county.” ....
Arbogast ELKINS An Elkins man was charged Friday in an incident in which he allegedly pulled a gun on police officers and damaged two police cruisers. James Clay Arbogast, 52, has been charged with wanton endangerment involving a firearm that was produced during the commission of a felony. According to the criminal complaint, at approximately 1:26 p.m. Thursday, the Elkins Police Department received a BOLO (be on the lookout) for Arbogast from the Buckhannon Police Department. The BOLO referenced Arbogast being suicidal and allegedly leaving suicide notes at the Walmart store in Buckhannon. The EPD was advised by 911 that Arbogast was to be in the Elkins area and would be driving a black in color Ford Fusion bearing a West Virginia registration, the complaint states. A tip to EPD’s Cpl. Boatwright led officers to the area of South Elkins with a possible sighting of the vehicle described. ....
Jan 30, 2021 Two strange, disturbing, violent incidents occurred in South Elkins within the span of a week. The fact that both incidents happened in that area is just a coincidence, but they both apparently share a common cause. On Jan. 21, a man apparently shot himself during an incident involving an Elkins Police Department SWAT team on Evans Drive. Ty Garrett Hilderbrand, 35, barricaded himself inside a home and was found dead of an apparent suicide after an hours-long standoff with area law enforcement agencies, police said. The City of Elkins put a shelter-in-place order in effect during the incident and residents of the First Ward area of South Elkins were asked to not go outside, not answer their doors, and to stay away from windows. ....
