Having both been brought up for periods in South Africa, Adam Broomberg (b. South Africa, 1970) and Oliver Chanarin (b. Britain, 1971) started their collaboration when editing
COLORS, the magazine published by Bennetton. “We weren’t photographers and we weren’t editors,” said Broomberg. But suddenly they found themselves at the core of the magazine. The series they produced in the early 2000s – stories of closed communities like refugee camps, mental hospitals, prisons or old people’s homes – established their reputation as photographers capable of making investigative portraits of people on the margins of society. From Behrouz Boochani to Bernard Collaery: photographer Hoda Afshar turns her lens on whistleblowers

“The whistleblower is the modern tragic figure in our current society,” says Hoda Afshar.
The Iranian-born, Melbourne-based photographer is talking about her new series, a collection of striking, monochrome 3D portraits of contemporary Australians who have spoken out about injustice, often at their own risk.
“For me it was about the character, not the individuals, it was about their actions, and at the heart of it, there was something that reminded me of the Greek tragedies,” she tells Guardian Australia. “That’s why I chose the title Agonistes, because this is a Latin word that means personal injury and an inner struggle.” ....

In 2021, Wellcome will award £26,000 to photographers telling provocative visual stories about the health challenges of our time as part of its world-renowned Wellcome Photography Prize, culminating in an annual exhibition in London, a prestigious awards ceremony, and international press coverage.
