Activist Bramson abandons tussle with Barclays, selling stake

LONDON, May 7 (Reuters) - Activist investor Edward Bramson
has sold his firm s 6% stake in Barclays, disbanding a
three-year effort to overhaul the British bank and ending a
stand-off with chief executive Jes Staley.
Bramson s fund, Sherborne Investors, had pressured Staley
since 2018 to scale back investment banking and demanded his
removal over his links to U.S. financier and registered sex
offender Jeffrey Epstein, but Bramson struggled to gain much
traction.
The value of the Sherborne vehicle dedicated to the Barclays
stake has fallen by around 150 million pounds ($209 million)
compared to the 700 million pounds it raised when it was formed ....

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - The European Banking Authority on Monday said it had been targeted by hackers, although no data had been obtained and it was redoubling efforts to shield itself amid a global cyber attack exploiting flaws in Microsoft s mail server software.
The European Union s banking regulator, which gathers and stores swathes of sensitive data about banks and their lending, said it believed the cyber attack had struck only its email servers. ....

FRANKFURT, Jan 19 (Reuters) - Government support is keeping roughly one in ten German companies afloat that would otherwise have gone bust during the coronavirus pandemic, the International Monetary Fund has found.
In a report that on Tuesday laid bare the scale of economic damage masked by state aid, the Fund also warned that, once support was unwound, bankruptcy could soar, potentially weakening Germany’s banks.
The analysis said the pandemic impact was worst for hotels and restaurants, where almost a third of loans could have gone unpaid without state relief. ....
