LEADING OFF: All-Stars Ohtani, deGrom on tap for starts

OHTANI DAY Angels two-way phenom Shohei Ohtani (3-1, 3.60) takes the mound for the first time since being named an All-Star on both sides of the ball. Ohtani plans to participate in next week’s Home Run Derby, then pitch and hit in the All-Star Game, meaning this will likely be his last turn pitching for Los Angeles before the break. The right-hander struggled in his last outing, allowing seven runs in 2/3 of an inning at Yankee Stadium. He’ll try to bounce back against the Red Sox and another AL All-Star, Nathan Eovaldi (9-4, 3.41). Boston has a major league-most five All-Stars.

6-foot-9 Ober makes major league pitching debut tonight for Twins

Copy shortlink: The Twins added pitcher Bailey Ober to their 40-man roster last fall to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft. The 6-foot-9 righthander will make his major league debut tonight when he starts against the White Sox (6:40 p.m., BSN) at Target Field. Scheduled starter Michael Pineda had a cyst removed from his inner thigh and has stitches, so the Twins moved his start back, manager Rocco Baldelli said. More inconvenience than injury, he said. Righthander Cody Stashak was also called up. Shaun Anderson and Derek Law pitched last night, and Anderson (strained quad) was put on the injured list. Law was designated for assignment.

Yankees news: Seven coaches, staff members test positive for COVID-19

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports New York Daily News | Kristie Ackert: The Yankees’ strange COVID outbreak continued on Wednesday, as pitching coach Matt Blake and three other support staff members joined Phil Nevin, Reggie Willits, and another part of the support staff among the seven who have tested positive for COVID-19 despite the J&J vaccine. All but one are asymptomatic, so that means that the vaccine is doing its job. As a precautionary measure, the Yankees also held Gleyber Torres who had COVID-19 in December out of the lineup in place of Tyler Wade. To monitor the issue, the Yankees have been tested three times since Tuesday and will continue to test frequently.
