After a year of unpredictable days, Beaver County schools are determined to offer juniors and seniors a night they can count on by giving them a prom. Despite a rise in local cases of COVID-19, this high school staple will go on for most local districts next month and give back to students a bit of what the pandemic has taken away from them. Some of the events announced are as follows: Central Valley School District s prom is scheduled for 6 p.m. May 7 at The Club at Shadow Lakes in Hopewell Township, Blackhawk School District s prom is scheduled for 7 p.m. May 14 at Blackhawk Stadium and Beaver Area School District s prom is scheduled for 6 p.m. May 22 at The Club at Shadow Lakes. ....
BEAVER The Beaver Area School Board is diving back into the district’s pool renovation project after COVID-19 put a ripple in its 2020 plans. At its March 22 meeting, the board will finalize costs for phase one of the two-phase renovation project, which will likely begin in June and end in August, just in time for swim season. Phase one was originally slated to begin last March, but the outbreak of COVID-19 delayed the project’s start. “I’m calling the first phase ‘everything but the pool,’” said Beaver Area School District Superintendent Carrie Rowe. In phase one, construction crews will repair piping and insulation, fix the roof and core borings, install a specialty HVAC unit and redo the lighting and ceiling in the natatorium. In phase two, they’ll install the new pool, complete with new decking and lining. Phase two is expected to start in April 2022, after the end of the swim season. ....

Pennsylvania’s Department of Education urged school administrators to implement full remote learning in late November following high COVID-19 transmission rates in multiple counties. Most local districts – reporting several positive cases in staff and students – abided by the guidance. Acting Secretary of Education Noe Ortega earlier this month encouraged districts to offer some in-person instruction to elementary pupils as early as Jan. 25 if proper social distancing and sanitizing efforts are in place. The state also recommended in-person instruction be offered to students with disabilities and those learning English, and advised schools to move younger students to a blended model of learning. ....
