KARACHI: The Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi on Thursday evening held an event to pay tribute to scholar Dr Shakeel-ur-Rehman Farooqui, who died of coronavirus on March 15.
Dr Farooqui was associate professor at the department of genetics, University of Karachi.
Shakil Khan was the moderator of the programme. He said Dr Farooqui loved the University of Karachi (KU). He was there until he breathed his last and is buried in the KU graveyard. In the latter part of his life, his fondness for literature, which may have been subdued because of teaching genetics for a long time, came to the fore. ....

Experts urge universities to prioritise local doctorate-holders instead of relying on foreign lecturers

For private universities across the country, any association to the western world can often be the brightest feather they can pin to their caps.
By virtue of which, foreigners routinely journey to Pakistan, where their services are hankered after in the local academia.
Once here, the possibilities are assumed to be endless. Climbing the professional ladder, claim local pedagogues, is relatively easier for those who come from the global north. Foreigner mediocrity is prioritised over native excellence in Pakistan, believes Karachi University’s former vice chancellor, Dr Pirzada Qasim. “If it is a western name like Edward on the resume, the person’s academic repertoire turns secondary in the eyes of the hiring managers,” he opined with conviction. ....

The Sindh High Court (SHC) has issued notices to the provincial universities and boards department, University of Karachi (KU) and others on a petition against the appointment of the KU acting vice chancellor (VC), Prof Khalid Mahmood Iraqi.
Petitioners Prof Muhammad Ahmed Qadri and Prof Moonis Ahmar had submitted in the petition that Prof Iraqi was illegally appointed as the acting VC of Karachi University in violation of the set precedents and procedure.
They submitted that the acting VC was also an applicant in the ongoing but much delayed process of the appointment of a permanent VC and alleged that during his tenure as the acting VC, he took decisions that could not be taken by an acting VC and he usurped the authority of other authorities of the varsity. ....

Poet Naseer Turabi dies - Newspaper


KARACHI: Distinguished Urdu poet Naseer Turabi died of a heart attack here on Sunday evening. He was 74. He leaves behind his wife and two sons.
Mr Turabi was born on June 15, 1945 in Hyderabad Deccan. He was the son of the renowned religious scholar and khateeb Allama Rasheed Turabi. After independence his family decided to migrate to Pakistan and settle in Karachi where he grew up. He obtained his masters degree in journalism from the University of Karachi in 1968 after which he joined an insurance company.
Despite having brilliant command over the Urdu language and a gift for writing top-notch poetry, he published his first collection of poems a bit late in his career. Titled Aks Faryadi it came out in the year 2000. Afterwards, he published a book on Urdu poetics Sheiryaat followed by Laraib (a collection of na’at, manqabat and salaam) and Lughatul Awam, a dictionary of slang or colloquial words.
