Traffic across city snarled as shoppers throng markets before complete lockdown
Karachi
May 7, 2021
After the news of complete lockdown in the city from May 9 onwards circulated in the media, people of Karachi thronged malls and markets of the city on Thursday for Eid shopping, creating a chaotic situation and severe traffic jams in almost all the major arteries of the city that lasted even till Iftaar.
Many shopping malls in Karachi opened at around 6am in the city on Thursday. Thousands of buyers reached early in the morning as the malls were supposed to be closed by 6pm.
According to the traffic awareness and social media unit of the DIG traffic, Karachi traffic movement remained slow from 1pm until sunset in Liaquatabad No 10 and near Firdous Market due to a large number of visitors. The same situation was witnessed in the Saddar area where shoppers thronged Zainab Market and traffic was bumper to bumper at Fawara Chowk, II Chundrigar Road and different streets of Saddar.
ALTHOUGH the Firdous Market underpass, connecting Gulberg to Lahore cantonment and DHA, was meant to ease the vehicular flow, the problem has persisted. The main obstacle causing the problem is the traffic signal at the Cavalry Ground intersection in the cantonment.
While the traffic flows smoothly through the underpass, it snarls up at this particular junction. With little hindsight and coordination between the provincial government and the cantonment board concerned, traffic flow could have further eased with the construction of another underpass/flyover at the Cavalry Ground crossing. As things stand, whatever time and fuel are saved at the underpass are wasted at Cavalry Ground intersection.
LAHORE: To maintain the worsening cleanliness-related issues in the city, the Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) has sought help from six civic agencies/departments for the provision of adequate equipment.
Since the civic departments, including the Lahore Development Authority (LDA), Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) and Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA), have not heeded the request, the coming days seem tougher for the company as well as dwellers of the city. Moreover, the company has also been restrained from using the machinery of a Turkish contractor in light of a stay order issued by the Lahore High Court, Dawn has learnt.

LAHORE: The Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) Friday continued its waste lifting operation but failed to achieve the target of zero waste in the provincial capital.
Heaps of garbage on the City roads became a common sight since the LWMC has taken over the machinery and workshops of its Turkish contractors after which they were left idle. However, a press statement issued by LWMC claimed that all the officials, workers and machinery have been deployed in the field in three shifts. Waste from most of the areas has been cleared. The areas include Nisbat Road, Shah Jamal, Haq Nawaz Road, Gulberg, Shah Alam Market, Circular Road, Daroghawala, Firdous Market, Muslim Town and Samanabad. The LWMC that the whole operation was closely monitored by top management of the department and the officers also visited various areas to ensure effective cleanliness operation.
