Officials work on lowering projected cost of Peters Township fire substation


Although the preliminary design for a new Peters Township Fire Department substation comes with an estimated cost of $4 million, township officials are working on ways to lower the figure.
“This is very much a work in progress,” township manager Paul Lauer said as he and fire Chief Michael McLaughlin presented the design during the June 28 meeting of Peters council.
Renderings of the building drafted by EPM Architecture of Bradford Woods show three bays for parking vehicles.
“Chief McLaughlin and I both feel that perhaps what makes more sense, given the size of the bays, is to actually eliminate one of those bays and have two drive-through bays,” Lauer told council. ....

Peters Township officials seek clarity regarding streets policy


A decision made by Peters Township Council in May has created a source of confusion for administrators and public safety officials.
Council voted 4-3 against the municipality acquiring by eminent domain a small piece of private property for the purpose of building a street connection between two residential plans.
According to township manager Paul Lauer, the action runs counter to a long-standing policy that “residential developments should have multiple means of ingress and egress,” primarily to maximize emergency response times.
“And there are to be no dead-end streets. In fact, ‘no dead-end streets’ is actually incorporated into an ordinance,” Lauer said at council’s June 28 meeting. “So we’re not clear right now exactly what council is telling us with regard to these streets.” ....

Washington Health System launches vaccination clinic in Peters Township


Washington Health System launched its vaccination clinic Monday at the Peters Township Community Recreation Center.
“They’re using one of the basketball courts, half the gym,” township manager Paul Lauer reported at that night’s meeting of Peters council. “That clinic is going to run six days a week, 10 hours a day. Today, they did just shy of 250 vaccines.”
The health system’s intent at this point, he said, is to vaccinate 300 people a day at the site.
“Their hope is to be able to ramp that up, and having stopped over there today,” Lauer said about his visit to the center, “they certainly have the capacity to do far more vaccinations there than what they did today.” ....
