New Cambridge mayor to scrap £2bn metro scheme

Plans for a £2bn Cambridge Autonomous Metro are to be scrapped, the new mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough has said.
Labour’s Nik Johnson confirmed that he would scrap the project after beating his rival, the Conservative incumbent James Palmer, to the post.

Cambridge Independent after his win, Johnson confirmed that he would not be proceeding with the project, which could have seen a fleet of autonomous vehicles ferry residents around the counties
The Cambridgeshire Autonomous Metro (CAM) aims to deliver a new transport system to connect towns and villages across both Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. In March the project unveiled three sets of designs for the new transport system. One proposal would see a fleet of driverless pods ferrying people between 84 predetermined stops. ....

English local elections 2021: how to really read the results

The headline results of the local elections in England are clearly bleak for Labour and rosy for the Conservatives. The Liberal Democrats are, in effect treading water, while the Greens and independents have made some gains in terms of numbers of councillors.
But these are the aggregate council results. The top-level masks so many discrepancies. When listening to so much of the media coverage about these local elections, many candidates and councillors must get disheartened. Park and ride at Milton will be suspended from Monday says Stagecoach. Its reasons were explained in a surprise statement issued last night.

Milton Park and Ride – built at a cost of over £3.1m and opened 13 years ago – will close indefinitely from Monday May 10.
Stagecoach says the decision has been brought about by government restrictions on numbers who can travel by bus.
“Nationally, this has led to a shortage of resources as the lockdown restrictions are eased and more people use the buses to get to work and education,” the company said. ....

Mayor James Palmer says he will not be releasing an official manifesto, but says he has a clear vision for a second term.
The mayoral election on May 6 will decide the next leader of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority.
Mr Palmer says that his ambition is that £100,000 homes will make up 10 per cent of all new developments in the county.
