Automakers Need Government Help More Than Ever

There s no quick solution to the semiconductor chip crisis.
It wasn t too long ago when top automaker executives, including Ford CEO Jim Farley, predicted the semiconductor chip crisis would be resolved in the second half of this year. The reality is very different and potentially far more painful unless steps towards greater domestic production are immediately taken.
Automotive News spoke to some industry analysts about the current situation that began last year when chip suppliers sold their product to electronics manufacturers instead of automakers who were forced to stop production due to pandemic-related lockdowns. With demand greater than ever for trucks and SUVs like the Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Blazer, car companies can t complete vehicle assembly until those crucial chips arrive. ....

IHS Markit found that an Audi Q7 SUV relies on 38 microchip units from seven different suppliers, including five each in the infotainment and chassis/body control domains.
Automakers and analysts have been optimistic in recent weeks that the worldwide shortage of microchips would work itself out in the second half of this year. But that upbeat prediction is changing.
Many are now concluding that there is no easy path out of the mess because of the cost and complexity of the semiconductor supply chain. The growing outlook: The auto industry may have to rethink how it sources chips until producers can fulfill commitments for new capacity a process that will take years. ....

The Audi Q7 SUV has 38 microcontroller units, or MCUs, from seven different suppliers, a study from IHS Markit found.
The automotive industry has been able to work through most supply disruptions, but the chip shortage that has brought persistent production stoppages since December with no end in sight has baffled even the most hardened veterans.
I have been in this industry for 31 years, and this is a situation I have never experienced before, said Peter Schiefer, president of the automotive division at Infineon Technologies, one of the largest automotive semiconductor makers, especially for power electronics.  ....
