NEW ORLEANS With qualifying for city elections now complete, you’ll soon be hearing from many of the candidates running for office in New Orleans.  Like so many previous elections, public safety and crime will be issues of concern.  Homicides, shootings and carjackings in New Orleans are up double-digit percentage points compared to last year.  Those numbers are even greater going back to 2019.  City elections will take place in the fall, and soon, candidates will be laying out their plans to reduce crime in the city.    ....

NEW ORLEANS The arrest of Calvin Thompson began as a routine traffic stop in February 2020 after officers Jonathan Mykulak and Sasha Winchester say he blew through a stop sign while driving erratically. 
As viewed from the officers’ body camera video, the scene began calmly under the streetlights at Viola and Leeds Streets in eastern New Orleans. ....

NEW ORLEANS A shooting that wounded eight people is under investigation. New Orleans Police said the shooting happened around 10:30 Saturday night in the 10,000 thousand block of the South Service road of I-10 in New Orleans East. 
Among the victims is a woman who was shot in the face. So far, police have no updates on a suspect or motive.  ....

Could training stop fatal Columbus police shootings of juveniles?


The death of 16-year-old Ma Khia Bryant on April 20 put the Columbus Division of Police in an unsettling position among the nation s law-enforcement agencies.
Ma Khia was the fifth juvenile to be fatally shot by Columbus police since September 2016, when an officer shot 13-year-old Tyre King.
Only the Chicago Police Department has killed more juveniles 12   since the nonprofit Mapping Police Violence began tracking fatal uses of force by law-enforcement agencies back to 2013.
Columbus police are tied for second place with the New York City Police Department, whose officers also fatally shot five juveniles during the study period.
In fact, more juveniles have been killed by Columbus police since 2013 than have died at the hands of law enforcement in 40 states, according to the data. (Columbus police didn t kill any juveniles from 2013-2015.) ....
