For early amphibians, a new lifestyle meant a new spine

Vertebrate life began in the water, but around 340-360 million years ago, four-limbed creatures, or tetrapods, made the transition onto land. In the years that followed, some species adapted to terrestrial life, while others turned back to the water and readapted to an aquatic lifestyle.
A new study of these early amphibians, published in the journal
PLOS ONE and led by Penn paleontologist Aja Carter, suggests that these environmental shifts left an impression on the shape of the animals spines.
I m interested in how the shapes of the vertebrae affect how animals move, she says. Our findings suggest that, in at least one part of the vertebrae, the shape of the bones correlated with the environment in which the animals were living. Those associations, Carter says, may be a result of the different physical demands of living on land versus in the water. ....

Scientists at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science and other institutions announced a newly described horned dinosaur discovered near Cuba.
The dinosaur roamed the area 82 million years ago as one of the earliest ceratopsid species, a group known as horned or frilled dinosaurs. Researchers published their find in the journal PalZ.
The Menefeeceratops sealeyi dinosaur adds important information to scientists’ understanding of the evolution of ceratopsid dinosaurs. In particular, the discovery sheds light on the centrosaurine subfamily of horned dinosaurs, of which Menefeeceratops is believed to be the oldest member. ....

The Ceratopsidae family has many members, and a brand new one was just described in a scientific journal for the first time.

Menefeeceratops sealeyi were originally discovered back in 1996 by a researcher named Paul Sealy from the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science. At the time, it didn’t get its due, but researchers have now examined it in detail and determined that it is indeed an entirely new species from the Ceratopsidae family, and it’s believed to be the oldest one yet. ....

Scientists at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science (NMMNHS) and other institutions have announced a newly described horned dinosaur first discovered near Cuba, New Mexico, and roamed the area 82 million years ago as one of the earliest ceratopsid species, a group known as horned or frilled dinosaurs.
Researchers published their find in the journal PalZ (Paläontologische Zeitschrift).
Menefeeceratops sealeyi adds important information to scientists’ understanding of the evolution of ceratopsid dinosaurs. In particular, the discovery sheds light on the centrosaurine subfamily of horned dinosaurs, of which Menefeeceratops is believed to be the oldest member. Its remains offer a clearer picture of the group’s evolutionary path before it went extinct at the end of the Cretaceous. ....
