Doctorate of Divinity degrees awarded to two Regina Anti-Poverty Advocates

Peter Gilmer and Bonnie Morton from the Regina Anti-Poverty Ministry have been honoured with Doctorate of Divinity degrees from St. Andrews College.
Both Gilmer and Morton have worked for several years with the ministry to help low-income residents and families get back on their feet, as well as public advocacy.
While the doctorates were supposed to be issued last year, Gilmer says this year works just fine.
“2021 is an important year for us for a few reasons,” Gilmer said. “It marks 50 years since the creation of our forerunner which is The Regina Downtown Chaplaincy so there’s been 50 years of this ministry here but also 25 years of that has been through the Regina Anti-Poverty Ministry.” ....

Survey finds hundreds of rental arrears in Saskatoon and Regina

Sask. residents fighting to reverse provincial CERB clawback

The Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) was aimed at helping people through the pandemic, and now people who received other benefits may have to pay it all back.
As it stands, anyone who received CERB while receiving provincial income assistance, must pay back their CERB loans fully by December 31
st.
Peter Gilmer with the Regina Anti-Poverty Ministry says Saskatchewan is the only western province to have this rule in place.
“Many provinces have handled this differently. British Columbia, Yukon, and the Northwest Territories all gave a 100 percent exemption upfront so people knew that they could actually benefit from CERB,” said Gilmer. “Here unfortunately, it is being taken dollar for dollar, and we think that it’s fundamentally unfair.” ....

As Regina schools return to online learning, school divisions are preparing to supply low-income students with the devices and data to allow them to stay in class. (Radio-Canada)
With Regina s public and Catholic schools returning to online learning next week, school divisions are preparing to help low-income students with the technology they need to get to class.
The public school board announced Monday that all students from pre-kindergarten to Grade 12 will move to remote learning starting Dec. 14, with in-class learning resuming on Jan. 11. Regina Catholic Schools said Tuesday they will do the same. ....

In late March, Kaitlyn McMurray joined the ranks of Canadians who lost a job due to COVID-19.
The single mom of an eight-year-old girl, McMurray relied on her part-time income as a child care worker to help pay her monthly bills. She had also been receiving benefits from the Saskatchewan Assured Income for Disability Program (SAID) due to a heart condition for which she is awaiting surgery.

Upon informing Social Services of her job loss, McMurray said she was told she’d have to apply for either Employment Insurance or the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB). Having been approved for CERB, she said the province then told her she was making too much money so would be cut off from her provincial SAID benefits. ....
