Yorgen Fenech's mobile chat with uncle feature in ex-journalist's case

Yorgen Fenech’s mobile chat with his uncle on the eve of his arrest was the focus of a court hearing in libel proceedings concerning a former Times of Malta journalist.
Snippets of that phone conversation were read out in open court by the lead investigator in the Daphne Caruana Galizia assassination probe.
Superintendent Keith Arnaud was summoned to testify in a set of mutual libel suits filed by former reporter Ivan Camilleri and Malta Today managing director Saviour Balzan.
A reference to a Times of Malta journalist had been made by Arnaud back in December 2019 when testifying in the ongoing murder compilation against the businessman, accused as an accomplice in the Caruana Galizia assassination.  ....

Letters to the editor - February 14, 2021

Shift employees and public holidays
I refer to the article ‘Shift employees in the dark over leave entitlement’ (February 7). Surprisingly, the article seemed to have disregarded a rebuttal to a very similar article that featured two days prior in other media outlets.
In accordance with the 2017 electoral manifesto, the government is making true its pledge to reinstate public holidays falling on weekends in accordance with the procedure which was in effect prior to 2005. Therefore, necessary legal amendments are underway this year to fully implement this measure.
Employment law bestows on workers the right for entitlements in relation to public holidays. So as to calculate the entitlements in relation to public holidays, one must make a distinction between the rate of pay applicable when one works on a public holiday and the compensation given for public holidays that actually are not enjoyed by workers. ....

Property dealer recalls land transfer meeting before Lino Cauchi disappearance

During his lengthy testimony, Borg recalled how his involvement in the property market had brought him in touch with Pio Camilleri, a member of a political clique who allegedly forced him to relinquish plots of land in exchange for permits against his will.
His reluctance to part with property that was rightfully his had been met with bomb threats and even physical violence, Borg told the court, recounting one episode when Camilleri had allegedly stormed into his office, overturned his desk, and threatened, “unless you sign the deed agreed with Balzan, I’ll blow up your home”.
His family had, indeed, been the victim of a bomb attack, an emotional Borg explained.  ....

Retired forensic expert sheds light on Lino Cauchi's gruesome murder

The gruesome discovery had happened by chance when a man, drawing water from a well to wash his car, had stumbled across the suspicious remains after his bucket slipped down into the well.
Once the water, eight to 10 feet deep, had been drained, four plastic bags came to light, three of which were partly hidden under a mound of stones.
The first bag contained a badly fractured human skull, fragmented into 28 pieces, along with a sledgehammer.
The other bags revealed other human bones, some attached to ‘soap-like’ tissue.
A first autopsy had proved inconclusive, and local experts had consulted a well-known English pathologist, Ian West, who subsequently participated in a second autopsy on November 20. ....
