Editorial: Earth Day is about the good business of stewardship


Earth Day is not a crunchy granola holiday about a utopian future filled with solar-powered cars.
It is and from the beginning has been about education. It is less celebration than it is workshop, and that is exactly how it was envisioned in 1969 when it was first proposed as a way to teach about the environment.
It was bipartisan from the start. U.S. Sen. Gaylord Nelson, a Democrat from Wisconsin, joined forces with Rep. Pete McCloskey, a Republican from California, to get it rolling.
It has never been about pitting conservation against companies. The organizer that the politicians hired, Denis Hayes, relied heavily on union members like those from the United Auto Workers to get the event off the ground. ....

Earth Day: Appleton World War II veteran helped create holiday


William Cherkasky didn’t think Earth Day would catch on in 1968 as he and other progressives discussed political strategies on a fishing boat off the coast of Miami.
The former Appleton resident and World War II veteran was chief of staff for U.S. Sen. Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin at the time, and they were trying to figure out a way to highlight environmental issues in a way similar to the Vietnam War teach-ins that were taking place at universities across the country.
“We all went down to Miami to take a rest, go fishing, drink a bottle of beer every now and then and eat takeout chicken in our hotel rooms,” Cherkasky said. “We started talking about the environment, and we all realized that could become a good issue.” ....
